The Weekly Pull

“Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out.” – Robert Collier

Getting back into the swing of life, or cycling regularly, after a sickness, surgery, or major life event can often feel like an overwhelming challenge. It’s easy to look at where we once were, physically and mentally, and wish we could instantly pick up right where we left off. If you’re like me, the hardest part isn’t the effort itself—it’s just starting.

We all dream of jumping straight back to the level of fitness or joy we once experienced, but the reality is that, in many cases, we have some hard work to do. That’s okay. It’s a journey that requires patience, persistence, and a whole lot of self-compassion. Perhaps we’ve been looking at it the wrong way. Instead of focusing on how far we have to go, what if we start viewing each small step back as a victory? Every moment spent moving forward, no matter how small, deserves to be celebrated.

When you think about it, how much time do we waste on regret, wishing we were where we used to be, rather than focusing on how far we’ve come already? It’s all too easy to get stuck in a negative headspace, comparing ourselves to others who might still be in the place we long to return to. But here’s the truth: we all face setbacks. Whether it’s physical, mental, or emotional, setbacks are a natural part of life. And when we take the time to talk openly about them, we begin to realize we’re not alone in this.

I’ve had the privilege of hearing stories from fellow cyclists, some of whom have faced incredible challenges, such as battling cancer. What’s truly inspiring is the sheer positivity and gratitude they bring to every conversation. After years of struggle, many of them are now cancer-free and back on their bikes, riding with a renewed sense of appreciation for life’s simple pleasures. What amazes me most is not the time it took to get back to where they were, but the way they cherish every moment they spend on their bikes again. They speak of the open road, the wind on their face, the freedom they feel, and the joy that comes from the sheer act of riding. Their stories remind me of why I fell in love with cycling in the first place. It’s not just about the destination—it’s about the experience of the journey, every pedal stroke along the way.

Sometimes, we need to remind ourselves to take it one day at a time and enjoy the process of getting back to where we want to be. This journey, while challenging, is also incredibly rewarding. When a friend or cycling buddy is facing their own setbacks, it’s crucial to reach out, let them know you miss them, and remind them that when they’re ready, you’ll be there to ride again. It’s not just about the ride—it’s about supporting each other, lifting one another up, and keeping that positive mindset alive, both for ourselves and for others.

So, no matter where you are on your journey, keep moving forward. Celebrate the small wins. Stay patient, stay kind to yourself, and keep pushing—because the road back might just be the most beautiful part of the journey. We all need reminders from time to time, and today, I’m reminding you to enjoy the ride.

Now, get out there, take that first step, and let’s see you on the road!

The Power of Castor Oil: A Natural Remedy for Knee Pain

Castor oil has been used for centuries for its various health benefits. With origins in ancient Egypt, it was once a staple in both beauty and medicinal practices. This versatile oil comes from the seeds of the Ricinus communis plant, and its uses range from a natural laxative to promoting hair growth, improving skin health, and soothing inflammation. It’s known for its high ricinoleic acid content, a compound that has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties, making it a go-to remedy for aches, pains, and joint discomfort.

I’ve recently experienced the incredible benefits of castor oil firsthand, and I wanted to share this with all of you. After tough bike rides, my knees have often been so painful that I could barely sit or stand without assistance. The sharp pain would linger for days, and although I typically avoid medication, I would rely on ice to help reduce the inflammation—though it didn’t always provide lasting relief.

After reading that castor oil is known for its anti-inflammatory properties, I decided to give it a try. I used 100% organic cold-pressed castor oil, which I already had on hand for other uses, and applied it generously to my knees and even my feet before bed. The results were nothing short of amazing. The very next morning, the sharp pain in my knees was completely gone. I couldn’t believe it. What had been an ongoing, persistent pain was simply… gone.

Now, I’m not talking about a slight ache or discomfort. This was a sharp, intense pain that had me concerned. But after trying castor oil, I woke up feeling like a new person. My husband can vouch for the difference. I was so excited about the results that when a friend of mine mentioned she was experiencing knee pain, I told her about my experience. She tried it and texted me later that her pain was gone too!

It might sound too good to be true, but I can honestly say castor oil has worked wonders for me. If you’ve used it before for its anti-inflammatory benefits or for other health reasons, I’d love to hear your experiences! And if you’re trying it for the first time after reading this, please share how it worked for you.

Do you have any other natural remedies that have worked miracles for you? Let’s exchange ideas and share our victories—because when we share what works, we all reap the benefits.

Here’s a simple recipe for a High-Protein Vegetable Soup that’s both hearty and nutritious!

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 medium carrot, diced
  • 2 celery stalks, diced
  • 1 zucchini, chopped
  • 1 cup green beans, chopped
  • 1 can (15 oz) diced tomatoes (with juice)
  • 4 cups low-sodium vegetable broth (or chicken broth for extra protein)
  • 1 can (15 oz) chickpeas, drained and rinsed
  • 1 cup cooked quinoa (or lentils for added protein)
  • 1/2 cup spinach (or kale)
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried rosemary
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: Red pepper flakes for a little spice

Instructions:

  1. Prep the Vegetables: Start by chopping the onion, garlic, carrot, celery, zucchini, and green beans. Set them aside.
  2. Sauté the Base: In a large pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and garlic. Sauté for 2-3 minutes, until softened and fragrant.
  3. Add the Vegetables: Add the diced carrots, celery, zucchini, and green beans to the pot. Sauté for an additional 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. Add Broth and Tomatoes: Pour in the vegetable broth and add the diced tomatoes with their juice. Stir everything together.
  5. Add Protein: Stir in the chickpeas and cooked quinoa (or lentils). These are your main sources of protein for this soup.
  6. Season the Soup: Add the thyme, rosemary, salt, pepper, and optional red pepper flakes. Stir to combine.
  7. Simmer: Bring the soup to a simmer, then lower the heat and let it cook uncovered for about 20-25 minutes, until the vegetables are tender and the flavors meld together.
  8. Add Greens: In the last 5 minutes of cooking, stir in the spinach (or kale) and let it wilt into the soup.
  9. Taste and Adjust: Taste your soup and adjust the seasoning with extra salt, pepper, or herbs if needed.

Serving Suggestions:

  • Serve this soup with a sprinkle of grated Parmesan or your favorite cheese for extra flavor.
  • For added protein, you could toss in some cooked chicken breast or tofu cubes.

This soup is packed with protein from chickpeas, quinoa, and vegetables, making it a satisfying meal that’s both filling and nutritious. Enjoy!
