“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single pedal stroke.”
This quote perfectly encapsulates the essence of what it means to be a part of the cycling community, especially when you are stepping into the world of group riding. It’s not just about the distance or the speed; it’s about the people who ride beside you, the relationships that grow, and the shared experiences that make every ride more meaningful. This week, I had the privilege of hearing a friend share his experience about being asked to lead the Novice cycling group. It was a role that he had never been in before—one focused on teaching and developing new cyclists rather than just riding with the group. His initial reaction was quickly replaced by joy, as he realized how rewarding it was to be able to encourage and guide those new to cycling.
This got me thinking about the importance of mentorship and encouragement in the cycling world. When you’re new to group riding, it can be overwhelming. There are a lot of unspoken rules—how to ride safely in a pack, how to communicate, how to stay focused while maintaining a smooth rhythm—and they can seem like a lot to take in. But, as my friend discovered, the best way to learn isn’t through orders or instructions alone; it’s through guidance, patience, and creating a welcoming environment where new cyclists feel supported, not scrutinized.
Whether you’re in a position to lead or just riding alongside, we all have the opportunity to make a lasting impact on someone’s journey into group cycling. The stories I hear from new cyclists who are made to feel unwelcome or who get discouraged because they weren’t given the proper guidance or encouragement are heartbreaking. On the flip side, I’ve heard stories of individuals who felt supported and welcomed, and as a result, they’ve not only stayed in cycling but have fallen in love with it.
At the core of it all is a simple but powerful truth: making someone feel comfortable and confident is the key to their growth. I’ve seen this in my own life, both in and outside of cycling. In my career in the operating room, I have had the privilege of being a mentor. Watching a new team member grow, gain confidence, and find their passion for the role is incredibly fulfilling. It’s the same with cycling. As seasoned cyclists, we have the chance to pass along our knowledge, offer encouragement, and share our love of the sport with those just starting out.
Maybe it’s as simple as inviting a friend who’s expressed interest in cycling to join you on a short, easy ride. Take them to a quiet neighborhood, give them safety tips, and show them the basics of group riding. Or perhaps it’s helping someone who’s struggling with a bike that’s just not right for them. I know cyclists who have gone so far as to accompany someone to a bike shop, lending advice and helping them find the right bike—an effort that can make all the difference when a beginner is feeling intimidated by the vast world of bike components and choices. The world of cycling shops can be daunting to someone unfamiliar with it, especially when all they’ve known is the heavy, underperforming bike from the big box store.
Even a small gesture can mean the world to someone new to cycling. Maybe it’s just a few words after a ride, like, “It was great to meet you, and I hope to see you again soon.” Such simple acts of kindness can go a long way in making newcomers feel welcome and encourage them to come back for more.
We are all busy, but sometimes, the smallest efforts—investing just a few seconds of our time to encourage or offer support—can make a huge difference in someone’s experience. It’s not about grand gestures; it’s about the simple, human act of making someone feel seen and appreciated. When we step outside of our own bubble and take a moment to invest in others, we all grow—not only as cyclists but as individuals.
Isn’t that what we all want in the end? To be better, more supportive humans, fostering a community where everyone can thrive and find joy?
So, next time you’re out on a ride, look around you. Whether you’re leading a novice group, riding alongside a friend, or just sharing the road with someone new, take the time to offer a word of encouragement. You never know—the simple act of reaching out could be the catalyst for someone’s love of cycling to blossom.
I hope to see you out there, pulling the line, and helping others along their own journey.

Here’s a delicious Starbucks Copycat Egg Bites recipe you can make at home! These little protein-packed bites are perfect for breakfast or a snack, and they’re surprisingly easy to make. You can customize them to your liking by adding your favorite ingredients.
Starbucks Copycat Egg Bites Recipe
Ingredients:
- 6 large eggs
- 1/2 cup cottage cheese (for creaminess)
- 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese (or a mix of mozzarella and cheddar)
- 1/4 cup milk (or heavy cream for a richer texture)
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp pepper
- 1/4 tsp garlic powder (optional)
- 1/4 tsp onion powder (optional)
- 1/2 cup cooked bacon, diced (or cooked sausage, spinach, or veggies of choice)
Optional Add-ins:
- Fresh herbs (like chives, parsley, or basil)
- Bell peppers, mushrooms, spinach, or onions (if you prefer veggies)
- Feta or goat cheese for a different flavor
Instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C). You’ll want to bake the egg bites slowly to get a creamy texture.
- Prepare your muffin tin: Lightly grease a 12-cup muffin tin or use silicone muffin cups (which work really well for egg bites). This will make removing the egg bites easier once they are done.
- Blend the egg mixture: In a blender or food processor, combine the eggs, cottage cheese, mozzarella cheese, milk, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Blend for about 15-20 seconds until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
- Add your mix-ins: Fold in your choice of cooked bacon (or other protein), veggies, or herbs. If you’re adding veggies, it’s best to sauté them first to remove any moisture.
- Pour the egg mixture: Divide the egg mixture evenly between the muffin cups, filling each about 3/4 of the way full.
- Water bath method: To achieve a creamy texture, place the muffin tin in a larger baking dish or roasting pan. Fill the larger pan with hot water until it reaches about halfway up the sides of the muffin cups (this will create a gentle steam for baking).
- Bake: Carefully place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the egg bites are set and lightly golden around the edges. You can test them by inserting a toothpick—if it comes out clean, they’re ready.
- Cool and serve: Let the egg bites cool for a few minutes before removing them from the muffin tin. Serve warm and enjoy!
Storage:
- Fridge: You can store leftover egg bites in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. They reheat well in the microwave or oven.
- Freezer: You can also freeze them! Place the egg bites on a baking sheet in a single layer, freeze for a few hours, and then transfer to a zip-top bag or container. When you’re ready to eat, just reheat them in the microwave or oven.
Tips:
- The key to achieving that smooth, creamy texture is using cottage cheese and blending the ingredients well.
- You can experiment with different cheese combos like cheddar, gouda, or Swiss for different flavors.
- If you’re adding veggies, make sure to sauté them first to prevent excess moisture.
Enjoy your homemade Starbucks-style egg bites! They’re sure to become a favorite in your breakfast rotation.
